Volunteers needed to help in trauma cases

- LINDA MCINTOSH

Volunteers are needed to join an effort known as “Neighbors Helping Neighbors in Crisis.” That's what the nonprofit Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego calls its volunteers.

Volunteers are trained to offer care and support to fellow residents who have been traumatized by a personal tragedy or are in a state of crisis. Often survivors are alone and in shock after a sudden tragedy and need someone to talk to.

Trauma Intervention Program volunteers have been responding to crisis intervention requests throughout San Diego County for nearly 38 years offering compassionate support as they work side by side with emergency agencies.

Last year, TIP volunteers gave more than 51,000 hours of service assisting more than 8,700 people in crisis.

TIP partners with local fire departments, law enforcement and hospitals providing crisis intervention 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Volunteers are trained to respond to a range of tragedies, including, for example, car crashes, house fires, overdoses, domestic violence, natural or sudden death, drowning, suicide, attempted suicide, homicide and community disasters.

TIP volunteers come from various backgrounds and are all ages, 16 and older. Many volunteers have suffered trauma and understand how this kind of emotional support can significantly help the healing process.

“Volunteering with TIP is one of the most fulfilling experiences . ... Helping a neighbor when they're having a rough day is cornerstone of community,” said Tarah C., one of 65 TIP volunteers.

The Oceanside-based nonprofit is hosting three training academies throughout San Diego for community members who want to volunteer. The academy teaches five emotional first-aid skills of reaching out, protecting, reassuring, organizing and reinforcing. No experience is required to attend or volunteer.

Training sessions start Feb. 22 in East County and others are coming up in North County and inland.
