Bruce Forman Trio:

- George.varga@sduniontribune.com

Bruce Forman’s Sunday performance at Tio Leo’s will be doubly notable. The prized instrument he will be playing is a 1946 Gibson ES-350. It previously belonged to his mentor, jazz guitar giant Barney Kessel, who died in San Diego in 2004 at the age of 80. Forman, a Carmel Valley resident, was barely out of his teens when he first performed with Kessel in the Bay Area in 1978. Forman acquired the guitar in 2021, then played it on “Reunion!”, his Kessel tribute album with bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Forman will perform on this same prized guitar here this weekend to showcase some of the songs synonymous with Kessel’s name. He’ll be teamed with two of San Diego’s finest, drummer Duncan Moore and bassist Rob Thorsen.

almost monday, with Doublecamp and Foxtide:

The timing was less than optimal when the young San Diego indie-pop band almost monday released its promising debut EP, “don’t say you’re ordinary,” in October 2020, seven months into the COVID-19 shutdown of live events. The group’s debut tour ended up being pushed back two years until February 2022. In the interim, lead singer and guitarist Dawson Daugherty, guitarist Cole Clisby and drummer Luke Fabry made more music that saw them blow up on the Internet, with more than 100 million streams to date. The group’s catchy, well-constructed songs draw from various influences from various eras, including Foo Fighters, blink-182, David Bowie, Prince, LCD Soundsystem, Gorrilaz, Daft Punk and Jack Antonoff’s now-dormant band, fun. All signs indicate almost monday’s all-ages Music Box concert here should be a triumphant homecoming.

8 p.m. Thursday. Music Box, 1337 India St., Little Italy. $20. musicboxsd.com/shows
