- KEVIN ACEE

Batter’s box: Fernando Tatis Jr. walked, stole second base and scored the Padres’ first run on a triple by Jake Cronenworth. Tatis grounded out and struck out in his final two at-bats in his first big-league action since the end of the 2021 season. … Cronenworth also singled and is 4-for-8 with two doubles and a triple this spring. … David Dahl continued to push to make the team as an extra outfielder — and possibly the primary starter in right field while Tatis serves the final 20 games of his PED suspension at the start of the season. Dahl blasted a three-run homer in the first inning. He has also tripled and is 3-for-12 this spring. … Outfielder Jose Azocar, competing for a bench spot as well, was 1-for-3 with a double and is 3-for-9 with two doubles and a triple in his four spring games. … Infielder Tim Lopes, who has played parts of three major league seasons and spent last year in Triple-A with the Rockies organization, was 1-for-3 and is 4-for-10 this spring. … Jackson Merrill, the Padres’ top prospect, doubled and is 4-for-11 in five spring games.

Balls and strikes: Jay Groome threw two hitless innings and walked one in his second spring outing. The left-hander, who is vying for a roster spot as a starter or long reliever, has not allowed a run in 32⁄3 innings. … No other pitchers who would seem to have a legitimate shot at making the roster appeared in the game.

Extra bases: Trent Grisham made a diving catch in center field for the first out in the bottom of the first, and Cronenworth ended the inning with a diving stop at second base. … The game lasted just 2 hours, 24 minutes. Three of the Padres’ five games have lasted 2:32 or less. … Left fielder Juan Soto, who was scratched from Monday’s lineup with left calf tightness, is expected to start today.

On deck: Right-hander Nick Martinez is scheduled to make his second start of the spring, 12:10 p.m. PT today at Peoria Stadium. Martinez threw two scoreless innings in his spring debut.
