Google offers training for military, spouses

- LINDA MCINTOSH U-T

Service members transitioning out of the military into the civilian workplace can take advantage of free Google training and certifications.

Google is offering Google Career Certificates and Google Cloud Certifications as part of a collaboration between Google and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Navigator and Partnership Pilot. The program gives transitioning military and their spouses career help as they leave the military and prepare for civilian jobs.

The Grow with Google team worked with the Center for Veteran Transition and Integration at Columbia University and FourBlock, a New York-based nonprofit that helps service members transitioning to civilian careers.

Google Career Certificates and Google Cloud training and certifications are offered at no cost to transitioning military service members and their spouses enrolled in the Employment Navigator and Partnership Pilot at certain military installations, including Camp Pendleton and Miramar.

The Google Career Certificates provide training to help military and their spouses develop job-ready skills and earn a credential in the fields of data analytics, digital marketing and e-commerce, IT support, project management and user experience design, according to Grow with Google founder Lisa Gevelber.

Participants who complete the Google Career Certificate program have access to a group of more than 150 employers interested in hiring Google’s Certificate graduates. Participants can also choose one of the Google Cloud certification preparation courses, then pursue a certification at no cost to prepare for jobs such as cloud engineer, cloud developer and security engineer.

Also, to help military members in their transition to the civilian workplace, there is a special feature in Google Search to make it easier for service members to find a job using their skills. Service members can search “jobs for veterans” on Google and then enter their specific military job codes (e.g. MOS, AFSC, NEC) to see civilian jobs that require similar skills to those used in their military roles.
