No. 23 Aztecs vs. Wyoming

- MARK ZEIGLER

Records: SDSU is 23-6, 14-3; Wyoming is 9-20, 4-13

Series history: SDSU leads 49-41 and has won nine straight overall (and 14 straight at Viejas Arena). The Aztecs won 80-75 in Laramie on Jan. 7. The teams did not play in San Diego last season.

Cowboys update: They are coming off their biggest win of the season, 80-71 at home against Nevada on Monday on Senior Night, pulling away in the second half after making 10 3s and having a plus-10 margin on the boards. The roster has been severely depleted by a season-long leg injury to preseason Mountain West player of the year Graham Ike, a seasonending concussion to Noah Reynolds (14.5 points) and the midseason departure of three Pac-12 transfers: Ethan Anderson and Max Agbonkpolo from USC, and Jake Kyman from UCLA. But they still have Hunter Maldonado, who is arguably the Mountain West’s most complete player. Maldonado is already the conference’s career assist leader with 625, and he’s two rebounds shy of becoming the first player in Div. I history to amass 2,000 points, 800 rebounds and 600 assists (albeit with a fifth “COVID” year). His 1,200 career points in conference games rank second in Mountain West history, just ahead of BYU’s Jimmer Fredette and 60 behind Utah State’s Sam Merrill. This season, he averages 15.2 points for all games and 17.4 in conference games. With Reynolds out, the next highest scorer is Jeremiah Oden at 9.1 and Brandan Wetzel at 8.7. The Cowboys make 8.6 3s per game, second most in the Mountain West, but they rank 207th nationally in Kenpom defensive efficiency.

Aztecs update: Coach Brian Dutcher said he’ll start his seniors, which likely means a lineup of Adam Seiko, Matt Bradley, Aguek Arop, Keshad Johnson and Nathan Mensah. That puts Lamont Butler and Darrion Trammell on the bench. The Aztecs clinch the outright Mountain West title with a win or a Boise State loss at Utah State in a game that tips an hour earlier. Even with a loss against Wyoming and a Boise State win, the Aztecs would still share the title at 14-4 and still get the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament next week in Las Vegas. “We know we’re going to hang a banner next year, we know we’re the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, we feel we’re firmly in the NCAA Tournament field,” Dutcher said. “Now this is just being selfish. This is saying, ‘We like Leon Rice, we like Boise State, but we don’t like them enough where we want to give them part of the title.’ ” It is SDSU’s 15th Mountain West regular-season or tournament title, seven more than the next program on the list (New Mexico with eight). The Aztecs are 19-3 in their last 22 games following a loss and have won 25 straight when the next game is at Viejas Arena. They’ll play the winner of Wednesday’s 8-9 game in the Mountain West quarterfinals, and that could be UNLV, Fresno State, Colorado State or Air Force depending on results in their regular-season finales.

Next up: Thursday in the Mountain West tournament (noon, CBSSN)
