Cubs 4, Padres 0

- KEVIN ACEE

No-hitter: The Cubs beat the Padres on Friday night at Peoria Stadium, as seven pitchers combined on a no-hitter. It was the first no-hitter in a spring training game since 2017.

Batter’s box: Walks by Jake Cronenworth in the fourth inning, Austin Nola in the fifth, Rangel Ravelo in the seventh and Alfonso Rivas and Pedro Severino in the ninth provided the Padres’ only baserunners. … Manny Machado was 0-for-2 and is 1-for-8 over his past three games. … Nola is 3-for-8 with a walk this spring. … Shortstop Jackson Merrill, the Padres’ top prospect, arguably came closer to getting a hit than any Padres batter with a drive to deep left field and a flare to right that were both caught.

Balls and strikes: Julio Teheran got out of trouble in the first and third innings and took just nine pitches to get through the second inning. The veteran right-hander is in camp as a non-roster invite competing for a long relief or starting spot, and he has begun the quest with five scoreless innings. … In his second appearance — and last one before joining Colombia’s WBC team — Nabil Crismatt yielded a long home run to Edwin Rios in his first inning and a run on a couple hits and a sacrifice fly in his third inning. … Brent Honeywell, who is also trying to earn a spot as a long reliever or starter, allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base before retiring six straight (four by strikeout). He allowed two runs on two singles and an error before getting his only out in the ninth. … Luis Castillo entered with runners on the corners and issued a walk before getting out of the inning with a double play.

Extra bases: Left fielder Juan Soto’s left calf was still bothering him enough that he was not in Friday’s lineup. Soto was held out earlier this week with “tightness” in the calf but played Wednesday and Thursday, going 2-for-3 in each game. Said manager Bob Melvin: “Certainly is not affecting his swing.” … Outfielder Taylor Kohlwey, battling for a bench spot, started in left field. He is the only Padres player to appear in every game.

On deck: The Padres play the Diamondbacks at 12:10 p.m. PT today at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale, Ariz. Right-hander Reiss Knehr starts for the Padres. Relievers Josh Hader, Tim Hill, Robert Suarez and Steven Wilson are scheduled to make their Cactus League debuts.
