SAN DIEGO — Fred Weitzen Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Seacrest Village. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday May 10th at 2pm at Camino Memorial Park 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121.

Fred was born on July 18, 1929 in San Diego to Estelle and Fred Weitzen, Sr. Fred attended Hoover High School. While at Hoover, two significant events occurred in his life. First, Fred was named to the 1947 Breitbard Athletic Foundation

All Coast League team as a standout second baseman. The second life-changing event occurred when when Fred met a very pretty sophomore named Arlene Glickman. They dated for five years and married on November 25, 1950.

Fred spent his entire career in the field of court reporting. He was a principal in the firm of Weitzen, Weitzen and Ruffing, with his father and brother Joe for nearly 20 years. Fred then joined the San Diego Superior Court as the court reporter for Judge Mickey Greer and Judge Louis Welsh.

Fred’s interests and activities revolved around family and friends. Family vacations included trips in the station wagon to many National Parks, Big Bear and Warners Hot Springs. He was an active civic participant, from Little League Manager to Lions Club Foreign Student Exchange Family Host. Fred was also dedicated to community service as president of Congregation Beth Israel, Cystic Fibrosis and Big Brothers of San Diego. He was honored as National Conference of Christians and Jews Outstanding Jewish Citizen.

Fred’s passions included walks with Arlene and their many dogs; golf at Stardust and Morgan Run; enjoying nearly 50 years of meals with their Beach Group and travel. Among Fred’s most memorable trips are the Alaskan cruise with Steve and Ava; the European photo cruise with Skip and Janet, Joyce & Dick Disraeli and his beloved wife Arlene; and his trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame with Larry and grandson Asher. During retirement, Fred and Arlene drove across the country in their 28-foot motor home.

Fred is survived by sister Nancy; sons Steven, Harold-Skip and Lawrence; Daughters-inlaw Ava, Janet and Mary Lynn; Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchild.

The Weitzen families wish to acknowledge the wonderful staff at Seacrest. They were at their best when times got difficult for our parents. We’d also like to thank Light Bridge Hospice. They were all kind and compassionate with both our mother and father.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Beth Israel, Seacrest Village, Light Bridge Hospice or your preferred charity.
