SECTION CROWN AGAIN FOR WESTVIEW

- BY TERRY MONAHAN

For the second straight year, Westview High School is the gymnastics champion of the CIF-San Diego Section.

The Wolverines’ total last season was 221.075, but they captured this season’s crown with 216.350 to beat out Mt. Carmel (213.725) and Torrey Pines (213.325) on Friday at West Hills High School.

Steele Canyon was fourth with 212.825 with Rancho Bernardo at fifth with 210.265. West Hills was sixth with 210.100.

Leiana Takeda of Rancho Bernardo High claimed the optional all-around championship this season.

Takeda scored 36.050 points with Janelle Martinez of Granite Hills in second place with 34.850 and Mia Carpenter of Torrey Pines in third with 34.575.

The title is the first time a Rancho Bernardo performer has claimed the optional all-around championship.

Takeda also won the bars with an 8.850 ahead of Martinez with 8.800.

In floor exercise, Takeda scored 9.500 to barely edge out Carpenter, who tallied 9.450.

Martinez was third with 9.300. The beam title went to Mallory Hundley from Santana after she scored 9.300 ahead of Kennedy Moe from Grossmont, who had 9.025.

Takeda, who was second-team AllCIF in 2022 as a junior, was chosen as Gymnast of the Year.

“This is crazy,’’ Takeda said. “Winning all-around feels great, especially since gymnastics is not recognized much at my school.

“I feel if I do my best and I try my hardest I always think I have a shot at something like this.’’

Skylar Parga, a junior at Granite Hills, waited her turn on the floor exercise as the final competitor almost three hours into the compulsory session. It was well worth the wait. Parga already owned the CIF record score for the event and tied in last week’s Grossmont League finals.

The 5-foot-41⁄2 Parga was even better this week, posting a score of 9.95 on f loor exercise to snap her own section record of 9.925.

“My feet still haven’t touched the floor,’’ said Parga, who won the same f loor exercise in 2022. “My hands are still shaking.

“All I did all day was get nervous because sometimes I get into my head really badly.

“I quit doing club in the offseason, but I may have to go back and work on it a bit this offseason to get ready for senior year.’’

Despite Granite Hills dropping gymnastics after last season, Parga captured the compulsory all-around title thanks to her record event as well as tying for fifth in the bars with a 9.550.

Her all-around score was 38.150, edging Kiara Lutz and Kaya Nepomuceno, both from Westview, at 38.100.

“After floor ex, all I thought was that my day was over,’’ Parga said. “This is a bit more than I thought it would be.’’

Cerie Yoo of Mt. Carmel took honors in compulsory vault (9.725) with Nepomuceno winning bars (9.750) and Lutz taking beam (9.575).
