San Diegans throughout the county will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday during events at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and local schools.

In 2019, Indigenous Peoples Day was established as a holiday replacing Columbus Day on the second Monday of October in California when Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a proclamation that in part reads that “Instead of commemorating conquest today, we recognize resilience.” In 2021, President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to formally recognize the holiday nationwide through his own proclamation.

Check out this list to find a way to celebrate.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park: The

Pasqual Band of Mission Indians will once again host an all-day event that includes an opening blessing ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Benbough Amphitheater, followed by the telling of the tribe’s creation story at Mawazo Restaurant at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Traditional food will be offered throughout the park, and an Indigenous artisans exhibition will take place at Nairobi Walk until 6 p.m.

Guests age 6 and older can participate in a 1.2-mile hike through the park’s biodiversity reserve, which is home to more than 200 species, while learning about San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s conservation efforts, including with local species like the burrowing owls, desert tortoises, California condors and the coastal sage scrub ecosystem.

Paul Cannon, a singer/songwriter from San Pasqual, will perform throughout the day at The Barking Deer, and bird singing groups will perform in the BenSan
