Three San Diego police officers fatally shot a 22-year-old man late Monday who reportedly shot and injured a woman in City Heights, sheriff ’s officials said.

Police received a call about 11 p.m. that a man had shot someone on Polk Avenue near 45th Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim, who had a minor wound to her forehead, sheriff ’s Lt. Joseph Jarjura said in a news release.

San Diego police said the victim was 22 and was the alleged shooter’s former girlfriend.

The woman told police the person who shot her had left the area.

About a half hour later, officers located the suspect about a mile away on Wightman Street near 40th Street and tried to talk with him, but he ran away, authorities said. As he was running he reached into his waistband, Jarjura said.

Officers told the man to stop, but he kept running and then turned toward the officers while continuing to reach into his waistband, Jarjura said.

“Officers gave the suspect multiple warnings. The suspect’s behavior prompted three officers to discharge their duty weapons. Multiple rounds were fired, and the suspect was struck,” Jarjura said in the statement.

He said officers located what appeared to be a gun near the man.

Police performed CPR and other aid on the injured man until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, where he died.

No other information was immediately available.

The Sheriff ’s Department is investigating the shooting under a countywide agreement that ensures no department investigates shootings involving its own officers.

San Diego police are investigating the shooting of the female victim.
