POINT LOMA HIGH’S ALLEN RESIGNS TO BE A DAD

- BY DON NORCROSS Norcross is a freelance writer.

Saying he wants to spend more time with his family, Point Loma High School football coach Joel Allen has resigned.

In three full seasons at the school, plus one game in the spring 2020 pandemic season, Allen posted a 22-15 record.

The Pointers advanced to the Division 3 championship game last season, losing the University City. Point Loma (8-5) lost in the Division 2 semis this season, falling to eventual champion Del Norte.

Allen, 39, and his wife have three children: daughters Reese, 14, a freshman at

Christian High School, Tessa, 11, and son Trey, 10. Reese is a cheerleader at Christian, and Allen said he was able to see her cheer at only two games this season.

“I didn’t like that,” he said. Tessa plays volleyball and Allen attended just one of her games this fall. Trey plays flag football, and Allen watched just one of his games this season.

“I’ve got this little window to be a dad and be involved with them,” Allen said. “That’s my priority, to be available for them, to be supportive of them.”

Allen coached at Bishop’s from 2009-2019, winning section titles in 2010, 2014 and 2016, including a state championship in 2010. His record was 100-35-1 at Bishop’s.

Allen has a career record of 122-50-1.

“I definitely am coaching again,” Allen said. “It’s too much fun and keeps me young. It’s just that now is not the time.”

Allen is the latest San Diego-area

high school football coach to depart this offseason. Kyle Williams at Poway, Mater Dei Catholic’s John Joyner, Tyler Arciaga at Bonita Vista and Shane Graham at Rancho Buena Vista have stepped down as head coaches for various reasons.
