State of the City speech set for next Wednesday

- ADRIANA HELDIZ DAVID GARRICK

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria will deliver his annual State of the City address at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The speech, which will be given at downtown’s Balboa Theatre, is an opportunity to summarize accomplishments, announce new initiatives and evaluate the city’s progress.

In last year’s speech, which was Gloria’s third as mayor, he said San Diego had shifted from preparation mode to problem-solving mode under his leadership.

That was more optimistic than his previous speeches.

In 2021, Gloria said San Diego was fragile because of the pandemic and its impact on the city’s tourism-reliant economy. In 2022 he declared San Diego ready to face its challenges, but he also painted a somewhat bleak picture of a city struggling with homelessness and potholes.

Initiatives announced by Gloria during last year’s speech include a policy change that has sped up construction of subsidized housing and new policies that make it easier and cheaper for property owners to repair damaged sidewalks. The speech will be shown live on the city’s website, sandiego.gov, and on the City TV channel carried by local cable operators.

Gloria is running for re-election this year. In the March primary, he faces four opponents: Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Larry Turner, Jane Glasson and Dan Smiechowski. church and its growth in places like Asia and Africa.

In 2018,

the Trump administration moved to vastly expand offshore drilling from the Atlantic to the Arctic oceans with a five-year plan that would open up federal waters off of California for the first time in decades and possibly open new areas of oil and gas exploration along the East Coast.

In 2023,

Rick Singer, the mastermind of a nationwide college admissions bribery scandal, was sentenced to

3 1⁄2 years in prison and ordered to pay $19 million after helping authorities secure the convictions of a slew of wealthy parents involved in his scheme to rig the selection process at top-tier schools.
