Nick Canepa’s Chargers report card

-

Quarterbacks B

Easton Stick ran the ball thinking he was the team’s best back, and it showed early. He finished the opening, 18-play drive fumbling near the goal line, and it was returned 97 yards for a TD. But he’s a tough guy and had his best game, albeit against scrubs. No touchdowns equals another loss. The Chargers couldn’t score one if all their drives began on the opponents’ 1.

Running backs D

Austin Ekeler played his final game for the Spanoses, and wherever he goes, he’s bound to get more work than he had this season (in which he still fumbled too much). Good as a pass catcher. Stick was the run game.

Receivers C

Thin as Saran, what Keenan Allen and Mike Williams finishing the semester in the nurse’s office (as did Jalen Guyton). Joshua Palmer and rookie No. 1 Quentin Johnston became go-to wideouts. Palmer did some things and Johnson was interfered with on a long pass, then a shorter one. Top tight end Gerald Everett got hurt, so Donald Parham exited his huge doghouse and had by far his best game.

Offensive line INC

Thinner. Right guard Zion Johnson was inactive. Jamaree Salyer got poked in the eye and left. Trey Pipkins also went down. Could have been worse.

Defensive line B

The line was already without released Sebastian Joseph-Day, and backup Nick Williams was inactive. Held its own.

Linebackers B

Khalil Mack, the team’s best active player, had an early sack. It was his 17th of a fine season, and most of them came without bookend/inactive Joey Bosa, who gets hurt brushing his hair. Mack had 2 tackles for loss, 2 batdowns and a pressure forcing a field goal. Eric Kendricks missed a pick.

Secondary C+

Had to deal with Blaine Gabbert at QB instead of Patrick Mahomes, with the Chiefs also missing a few wideout starters. Derwin James has been positioned better since Brandon Staley was canned, and he’s been much more visible. He was everywhere but Saugus. His best game. Asante Samuel Jr. got beat deep and missed a tackle. Alohi “Goodbye” Gilman had a pick.

Special teams B+

Got totally fooled on a fake punt — although why K.C. tried it with a seemingly insurmountable 7-0 lead is beyond teacher’s comprehension. Cameron Dicker The Kicker, shocked at the chances, still nailed four field goals. Derius Davis had a 48-yard kickoff return. Best “teams” of this century.

Coaching B

Interim Giff Smith coached his last road game — at home (Red Sea in the stands) — against the K.C. JVs. And his musket had neither ball nor powder. The team was tougher under him.

Next opportunity — The offseason SB (Stupid busy)

New head coach. New general manager. Dunce cap ownership. Many millions over the cap (although capologist Ed McGuire is as good as it gets). Holes. High draft choice. Horrible injury history to overcome. Paying Jim Harbaugh. Hercules would take a mulligan on this labor.
