Earthquake: The U.S. Geological Survey said a 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook parts of northern Oklahoma and neighboring Kansas on Saturday. The quake struck at 8:59 a.m. about 16 miles east of Cherokee, or about 100 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. No injuries or major structural damage was reported. Thousands of earthquakes recorded in Oklahoma in recent years have been linked to the underground injection of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. Regulators have directed producers to close some wells.

Lottery winner: The New Jersey accountant who held the sole winning ticket for last month’s $315.3 million Powerball jackpot says he had just refinanced his home to send his daughter to college. Tayeb Souami was introduced Friday at lottery headquarters. The 55-year-old Little Ferry man was an accountant for a food importing company but has since quit his job. Originally from Africa, Souami came to the United States in 1996. The married father of four decided to take the money in a lump sum, so he’ll get slightly more than $183 million after taxes.

Attempted murder charge: The son of actor Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett has been charged with attempted murder in an alleged crime spree last month that included randomly attacking five men and robbing a 7-Eleven convenience store. Los Angeles police say Redmond O’Neal was charged Friday. O’Neal, 33, who has struggled with drug addiction, is charged with punching or stabbing five men over several days last month in the Venice Beach and Palms neighborhoods. Police say two men were seriously injured, including one who was stabbed in the face. O’Neal already pleaded not guilty to a May 8 robbery and other charges, including possessing methamphetamine and heroin.

Police probe: The beating of a 33year-old man and the rough treatment of teenager prompted the chief of the Mesa (Ariz.) Police Department to enlist a former prosecutor to investigate the videotaped encounters and report directly to him. Police Chief Ramon Batista said the body camera footage of the two incidents last month left him “angry and deeply disappointed.” Batista has hired former Maricopa County attorney Richard Romley to undertake an investigation to ensure transparency and accountability in the process. Romley said his review will take several months and is not intended to determine whether any officers should be charged. Internal investigations are also under way in both cases, and the police department in nearby Scottsdale will investigate and make recommendations about possible charges.

Wildfire: Authorities in southwester Colorado ordered more people to evacuate Saturday near a growing wildfire. The evacuations were along a 2mile section of a county road about 8 miles north of Durango. Fire managers did not immediately know how many homes were affected. Deputies went door to door telling people to leave. More than 1,600 other homes already had been evacuated. The fire has burned nearly 14 square miles since it ignited on June 1. Authorities said no homes have been damaged or destroyed so far. The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for most of Colorado on Saturday, signifying high fire danger.
