Edwin J. Whitman, MD

Edwin Joel Whitman, MD of Emeryville, CA passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness and a life well lived. His curious nature lead him on enumerable adventures during his lifetime. He never missed an opportunit­y to connect with family and friends.

Edwin enlisted in the US Navy just after high school after which he attended the University of Pittsburgh. He continued on to earn his medical degree at Pitt and spent four years of surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic. He practiced in Hayward and Castro Valley for forty years. He was one of the first trauma surgeons in the East Bay. Edwin was active in the American College of Surgeons where he was a past president of the Northern CA Chapter. He was a dedicated member of Phi Delta Epsilon Internatio­nal Medical Fraternity for over fifty years. After retirement from practice, Ed traveled the country conducting cancer program surveys for the American College of Surgeons.

Edwin was an avid sailor and spent many years sailing and yacht racing in San Francisco Bay and along the California coast. He was a true connoisseu­r of the arts who loved the opera, symphony and theater. His entreprene­urial spirit lead to many business and real estate ventures.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Ellen, his children Marc and Bonnie Whitman, Michele Cohen, and Heather and Rob Mitchell, and grandchild­ren Travis and Hope Whitman, Arianna Cohen, and Meghan, Emily and Bobby Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his son Barry.

A memorial service will be planned for a future date.
