A lifelong and true San Franciscan, Edgar Stone passed away May 29 in San Francisco at age 97.

After graduating from Galileo High School, Edgar attended Stanford University. He graduated in 1941 shortly before enlisting in the Navy to serve in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Fanning, during World War II. Returning to San Francisco after the war, Edgar pursued a career as the owner of men’s clothing stores, but he reinvented himself at age 50 when he became a successful stockbroker.

Edgar was the chair and a longtime board member of the San Francisco Zoological Society and also served on the board of the Jewish Home for the Aged. He was a lifelong member of Temple Emanu-El and the Concordia Club and was also a longtime member of Lake Merced Golf Club.

While Edgar was a faithful fan of the 49ers and Giants, he was an even bigger fan of chocolate. One of his greatest joys was entertaining clients and friends with amusing stories, but nothing mattered more to him than his family. He was a devoted husband to the late Beatrice Stone, to whom he was married for nearly 50 years, and father to Marcia Sowers (late Philip Sowers), Ellen Davis (late Laurence Davis), and Patty Stone (Chuck Ortenberg). He was a beloved grandfather to Robbie Sowers, Amy Sowers (Bennie Rodriquez), Cindy Ruhl (David Ruhl), David Ortenberg, and Richard Ortenberg and great grandfather to Emily and Kylie Sowers and to Jacob, Amanda, and Rebecca Ruhl. Donations in Edgar’s memory may be sent to the San Francisco Zoo or a charity of your choice.
