Hot Property

- By Jordan Guinn

Bay windows in the living room of this Oakland home look out at the surrounding neighborhood.

Ann McCarty’s clients weren’t discouraged the first time they laid eyes on 1812 10th Ave. in Oakland’s Clinton Park neighborhood. To be sure, the house needed attention, but there was a lot to work with. A wealth of original details remained intact,

James Presho, a businessman who made his fortune in the silk trade, commissioned architect John Conant to build the house in 1908.

The Colonial Revival home was for Presho’s nieces, and the two-story home has changed hands several times over the years.

The most recent owners took over in 2016 and poured considerable capital into restoring its grandeur, said McCarty of Winkler Real Estate Group, who is listing the five-bedroom, three-bathroom for $998,000.

Set on a raised lot, the

home has distinct curb appeal. Its facade features ribbons of wood shingles and stucco set atop a cast stone base.

Newly built concrete steps stretch from the sidewalk to a corner porch bordered by fluted, square columns original to the home. The porch’s windows and antique front door entrance are original as well.

The interior strikes a balance between traditional and contemporary. Period coffered ceilings in the dining and family rooms remain in place, while the kitchen embraces modernity with its open layout and stainless steel Bosch appliances. Carrera marble fashions the counters and tops an island with a built-in gas cooktop.

French Oak hardwood lines the flowing main story as a restored hardwood staircase ascends to the carpeted bedroom level.
