Lowrie OK with 3rd base

- By Rusty Simmons

When A’s manager Bob Melvin approached Jed Lowrie about moving to third base to fill in for ailing Matt Chapman, the second baseman didn’t hesitate.

“He’s doing the best he can for his team, and it’s really admirable to really have no questions,” Melvin said. “He’s just said: ‘Whatever you need me to do.’ … For him to be up for it, from the second we talked about it, that’s really appreciated by the team and the staff.”

Lowrie accepted the move right in the middle of the AllStar campaign he has been making at second base and started at third base Saturday for the first time since Oct. 5, 2015. The switch-hitter went into the game against the Angels batting .283 with nine home runs and 42 RBIs.

Melvin said the lineup will generally be Lowrie at third base, Marcus Semien at shortstop and Franklin Barreto, who was called up from Triple-A on Saturday, at second base, with Chad Pinder subbing at each spot until Chapman is able to return.

The A’s don’t have a timetable for Chapman, who was put on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to Friday with a right thumb contusion and will see Dr. Steven Shin at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Southern California on Monday. Chapman took grounders before Saturday’s game, but the A’s said he won’t be able to hit until he consults with Shin.

“He wants to stay current defensively, because we don’t know a timetable yet,” Melvin said. “… If it is only 10 days, he wants to stay as ready as he can.”

Briefly: Left-hander Brett Anderson, sidelined since

May 19 with a strained left shoulder, threw a 30-pitch bullpen before Saturday’s game. The A’s staff plans to huddle this weekend and schedule his rehab starts. … Outfielder Matt Joyce (strained back) ran the bases before Saturday’s game and was cleared to start a rehab assignment Monday . ... The A’s optioned reliever Carlos Ramirez to Triple-A and recalled right-hander Josh Lucas.
