Federer reclaims No. 1

Roger Federer defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (5) to book his place in the Stuttgart Open final and reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal on Saturday.

“It’s nice that it happened but I’ve other problems,” said Federer, playing his first tournament since March. “I hadn’t played in three months, it’s on grass, it’s fast and difficult to get so far here. Still, I’m delighted to have achieved it.”

The Swiss great will play Milos Raonic as he bids for his 18th grass-court title and 98th altogether. Raonic earlier hit 19 aces and saved the only break point he faced as he defeated defending champion Lucas Pouille 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the other semifinal.

 Andy Murray confirmed he will make his return to competitiv­e tennis at the Queen’s Club tournament in England next week after almost a year out injured. The three-time major winner has not played since last year’s Wimbledon because of a hip injury and surgery.

WNBA: Victoria Vivians scored a career-best 21 points to help the host Indiana Fever get their first win of the season, beating the Atlanta Dream 96-64. Indiana’s 10-game losing streak matched a franchise record. The Fever’s last regular season win came on Aug. 6 and was followed by eight straight losses to end the 2017 season.

 Sylvia Fowles scored 25 points, hitting 10 of 13 shots, to help the host Minnesota Lynx beat the New York Liberty 85 to 71. Maya Moore added 20 points and Cecilia Zandalasin­i scored 13 for the Lynx (4-6), who had lost five of six coming into the game.  Diana Taurasi had 19 points, DeWanna Bonner added 15 and the host Phoenix Mercury beat the Connecticu­t Sun 89-72 to extend their winning streak to seven games. The Mercury (9-3) have the longest active streak in the WNBA and matched the 1998 and 2014 teams for the best start in franchise history.

Golf: Anna Nordqvist and LeeAnne Pace each shot 8-under-par 64 to share the third-round lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic near Grand Rapids, Mich. Nordqvist and Pace each birdied four of the first five holes and two of the last three — each making 20-footers on the par-4 18th — in their bogeyfree rounds at Blythefiel­d. They were at 18-under 198. Secondroun­d leader So Yeon Ryu was third at 16 under after a 69.

Motor sports: Courtney Force topped Funny Car qualifying for the fifth time in the past six events and the seventh time this season at the Fitzgerald USA NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, Tenn. Force had a 3.993-second pass at 325.92 mph Friday during her second qualifying run. The points leader has four victories this season, three in the past four events.

Death: Authoritie­s say Sacramento Kings forward Zach Randolph’s brother was shot and killed early Saturday outside of a bar in the Indiana city where the two grew up. At around 5 a.m. police found Roger Randolph, 35, bleeding between two cars outside of Hop’s Blues Room in Marion, about 60 miles from Indianapol­is. Investigat­ors don’t think it was a random attack. Zach Randolph was at the club that night and was questioned, but he wasn’t charged.
