NEWS OF THE DAY

Sanders ejected: White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Saturday that she was booted from a Virginia restaurant because she works for President Trump. Sanders said on Twitter that she was told by the owner of the Red Hen in Lexington that she had to leave Friday evening “because I work for @POTUS and I politely left.” Sanders’ treatment created a social media commotion, with people on both sides weighing in with their critiques. The separation of families trying to enter the U.S. has intensified political differences. Last week, Trump’s homeland security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, cut short a dinner at a Mexican restaurant after protesters shouted, “Shame!” until she left.

Candidate injured: A South Carolina lawmaker who defeated U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford in his re-election bid was seriously injured in a vehicle crash Friday and will require weeks of recovery and more procedures, a spokesman said. State Rep. Katie Arrington underwent surgery for her injuries and was recovering Saturday at a Charleston-area hospital, spokesman Michael Mule said. Arrington and a friend were struck by a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, officials said. The driver of the other vehicle — 69-yearold Helen White — died at the scene, according to Sheriff ’s Capt. Roger Antonio. The crash remains under investigation.

Police probe: Former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates will lead an investigation into a report that Minneapolis police officers have repeatedly asked medical responders to sedate people with the powerful tranquilizer ketamine. Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Medaria Arradondo announced Yates’ appointment Friday. A draft report obtained by the Star Tribune said the drug caused heart or breathing failure in some instances, and suspects had to be revived or intubated.

Ocean rescue: Three people were rescued Friday evening from the waters near Anacapa Island off the Ventura County coast. Their boat capsized, and the three had to tread water for nearly 90 minutes before Coast Guard rescue crews arrived. The three were not wearing life jackets. They were taken to a Coast Guard station in Oxnard for treatment.

Train derailment: A spokesman for BNSF Railway said Saturday that 14 of 32 derailed oil tanker cars in the northwestern Iowa dumped an estimated 230,000 gallons of crude oil into floodwaters, with some making its way to nearby rivers. Spokesman Andy Williams said nearly half the spill had been contained with booms at the derailment site near the town of Doon, and with an additional boom placed approximately 5 miles downstream. Williams said crews were working to remove the oil from the containment site. The railroad will focus on environmental recovery. Williams said “ongoing monitoring is occurring for any potential conditions that could impact workers and the community and, so far, have found no levels of concern.”
