May 8, 1942 – June 14, 2018

-

Mary, a longtime resident of San Mateo, passed away unexpectedly on June 14, 2018, at the age of 76.

Mary was born in Brownsville, TX to Louis and Lucille Bauer. The family moved to San Mateo her senior year of High School where she met her future husband, the late Walter Breit.

Walt and Mary had three daughters and although later divorced, they remained good friends until his death in 2001.

Mary worked for Pacific Bell and Macy’s before pursuing a career in law enforcement. First as a reserve police office in Foster City, then as a police dispatcher for the cities of Foster City and later San Mateo, for 20 plus years until her retirement in 1998. During her career she received many awards, including Dispatcher of the Year.

Mary was an avid Giants and 49r’s fan. Later in life she would also become a Warriors and car racing fan as well. She also loved her monthly casino trips with her best friend Patti, and occasionally with her daughters as well. Not always winning but always “having a good time”. A bowler for many years, she participated in various leagues at Bel-Mateo Bowl making lifelong friends. Mary was also a member of the San Mateo Lions.

In 2011 Mary met the love of her life, Ray Mahaffay, and although she promised him at least 10 years, they did have 7 ½ wonderful years together and he will miss her dearly.

Mary is survived by her three daughters, Lori Gomez, Nancy Breit-Lepe (John) and Kimberly Chester (Brent). Her partner Ray Mahaffay, brother Jim Bauer, grandchildren Derek and Sina Gomez, Savanah and Catie Chester as well as nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.

The family asks that donation be made to the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date. Mary was the matriarch of our family and no one will ever be able to fill those shoes. We love you mom.
