Sr. Maura Murphy, OSU

Sr. Maura (Mona) Murphy is a member of the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union. She peacefully answered the call of God to “come home” on June 10, 2018, at Good Samaritan Village Care Home where she had been a resident for 2 years. Sister Maura was born on March 26, 1929 in San Francisco. Her parents were Patrick and Ramona Murphy (Daley) She had only on sibling, Father John Murphy, a priest in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Sister was the last of her family, all had preceded her in death.

Sister Maura entered the Ursuline Order after high school in 1947. She made vows as an Ursuline Sister on July 16, 1949. She attended the College of New Rochelle where received a BA in French. She then went on for an advanced degree in French from Catholic University of America.

During her 69 years as an Ursuline she gave service in many areas. She taught French on the high school level in both Santa Rosa and San Francisco. She was the Provincial of the Ursuline Order of the Western Province for 8 years. Sister served as Assistant Directress in the House of Studies both in Missouri and California. She was principal of St. John Ursuline High School in San Francisco. After her retirement from education she gave 9 years of service to the people of Gualala, CA. There she helped build the parish church and co-founded the Good Buy Clothing Store to assist with second hand items for those in need. During the last several years of her life she was physically incapacitated and needed care. At the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow, Idaho she was a beacon of peace and a joy to the staff. Her smile and sense of humor were contagious!

A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 19 St. Mary’s Avenue, San Francisco. Committal will be on Thursday, June 28th, at 1:30 pm at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to the Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund, 9248 Lakewood Drive, Windsor, CA 95492.
