Testy Brady defends personal health coach

-

Tom Brady calls it “ridiculous” to suggest the suspension of Patriots receiver Julian Edelman is tied to the quarterback’s personal health coach.

The questions about Alex Guerrero, who has developed a a fitness and nutrition program for Brady since 2004, prompted Brady to abruptly end his first media availability of training camp Saturday.

“I have no comments, just ridiculous. I’m out,” Brady said before walking away.

Edelman brushed aside a similar question in his first comments since receiving his four-game ban for a drug-policy violation.

“What’s in the past is in the past. I love Alex and ultimately I’m worried about just going out here and playing football,” Edelman said. “I’m not here to talk about or make a headline or something.”

Edelman, tight end Rob Gronkowski and former Patriots receiver Danny Amendola are among several Patriots who have also worked or consulted with Guerrero.

In January, Patriots CEO Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick and Brady released a statement calling an ESPN report “flat-out inaccurate” that said there had been disputes between team officials and Guerrero regarding player-medical affairs.

Brady will turn 41 next week and has credited Guerrero’s program with helping to extend his NFL career, which is entering its 19th season. As part of the strict regimen devised by Guerrero, Brady eats a mostly plantbased diet during the season.

Brady provided another short response when asked if there was tension between him and Belichick this summer. “I have no thoughts,” Brady said.

Panthers’ Williams injured: Daryl Williams, ranked by Pro Football Focus as the top right tackle in the NFL last season, left the Carolina Panthers’ practice screaming in pain and was carted off the field with his right knee in a brace.

Williams tore the medial collateral ligament and dislocated the patella in his right knee. The team said there is no timetable for his return. Coach Ron Rivera said it was difficult for players to resume practice after watching what happened.

“We were kind of floating right there, especially on the offensive side,” he said. “You could feel it and it takes a little wind out of your sails a little bit.”

Darnold update: Sam Darnold sat out a second day of practice at New York Jets camp because of a contract impasse.

Darnold, the No. 3 overall draft pick this year, is expected to compete with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater for the quarterback job. He and Chicago linebacker Roquan Smith, the No. 8 choice, remain the only unsigned picks from the entire NFL draft.

The dispute seems to hang on contract language. Darnold will receive a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $30.247 million, including a $20 million signing bonus — when he signs. If a player is cut during his rookie contract, offset language provides the team with financial protection.

Browns owner lauds coach: Cleveland coach Hue Jackson, who is 1-31 through two seasons as the Browns’ head coach, continues to have the “unwavering” support of owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, who believe his third year will bring out the best in him and the team.

“I think we will see the real Hue Jackson,” Jimmy Haslam said. “He has good quarterbacks, he has some skill players, he has veteran offensive linemen — now, we have to figure out left tackle — and three really good (running) backs and a good defense.”

Briefly: The Seattle Seahawks and three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown reached agreement on a contract extension that locks up the protector of Russell Wilson’s blind side for the next few seasons. Terms were not disclosed. The NFL Network reported the deal is for three years . ... Washington defensive lineman Daron Payne injured his left ankle when he was stepped on in practice, and coach Jay Gruden said the firstround pick is expected to miss two to three weeks.
