RYAN KOST’S OFF-THERADAR PICK

-

Kali Uchis has been making music for years, starting with her mixtape “Drunken Babble” in 2012. It was well received for defying genres and pulling in influences from reggae to doo-wop to R&B. Still, she’s been floating a bit under the pop radar until recently. This year, Uchis released her first fulllength album, “Isolation,” to rave reviews. (Pitchfork gave the album the designation of “Best New Music.”)

Many reviewers praised what Uchis had been doing all along: mixing genres in new and provocative ways, carving out a sound of her own. Curiously, before the album dropped, Uchis was still having trepidation about whether that sound would connect with a larger audience.

“Sometimes I was worried that maybe my music wouldn’t be embraced by other people because it doesn’t really correlate with what’s trending at this moment, but I think embracing the isolation of that and taking the risk of making things that doesn’t sound like anything else right now makes music exciting,” she told Vogue in June.

If the fact that the first of her two concert dates in San Francisco has already sold out is any indication, she didn’t have anything to worry about.
