CLAUDIA BAUER’S DANCE PICK

-

When an artist name-checks Viennese Actionism as an inspiration, you know you’re in for something interesting. Choreographer-performer Monique Jenkinson and electronic composer Marc Kate cite the notorious 1960s performance-art outfit along with Diamanda Galás, Yoko Ono and scream-queen tropes as source material for “Girl,” a collaboration in dance, music, song, spoken word, critical theory and drag opening a two-weekend run on Thursday, Oct. 11.

While the concept jibes perfectly with Halloween (although the Actionists would scare off any mere goblin or ghoul), what the duo are really getting at is the liberation and empowerment of the feminine. Through a performative crucible, they will evoke themes of violence, fear and control, and ultimately forge a burnished, modern heroine.

Jenkinson will perform as her drag alter-ego, Fauxnique, with Kate improvising and manipulating sound elements in real time. “Girl” is the couple’s first full collaboration, as well as Joe Goode Performance Group’s maiden foray into producing outside artists.
