Stanford advances in NCAA tourney

Top-seeded Stanford won its school-record 28th match in a row, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament by sweeping Loyola Marymount 25-20, 25-15, 25-17. Stanford (30-1) won its 34th in a row at home, where it will host Washington State in a regional semifinal Friday. Kathryn Plummer had a match-high 16 kills to go with 10 digs and three blocks, Meghan McClure added 12 kills and six digs, and Audriana Fitzmorris had eight kills on 17 swings with four blocks for the Cardinal.

 Blake Parrish scored four goals and Oliver Lewis had 15 saves as host Stanford (21-2) reached the NCAA men’s water polo championsh­ip game with a 16-7 win over UC San Diego. The Cardinal will face USC at Stanford on Sunday.

Swimming: Two-time Olympic champion and former Stanford standout Simone Manuel completed a sweep of the sprint freestyles at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., winning the 100-meter race. Manuel touched in 53.38 seconds to beat Margo Geer by a second. Katie Ledecky, the 800, 400 and 200 free winner, finished fifth in in 54.76.

Golf: Tony Finau had a 5-under-par 67, good enough for a three-way tie for the lead in the Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas. Henrik Stenson and Jon Rahm each had 69s at Albany Golf Club. They joined Finau at 13-under 203. Tournament host Tiger Woods shot even-par 72 and was last in the 18-man field. Gary Woodland had a 67 to move two shots behind the leaders. Rickie Fowler had a 67 to pull within three shots.

 Justin Harding (8-under 64) joined overnight leader Kurt Kitayama (70) at 16-under and they held a three-shot advantage heading into the final round of the European Tour’s Mauritius Open.

Soccer: The worst-kept secret in American soccer is now official: Gregg Berhalter will be the next coach of the U.S. men’s national team. Berhalter, who will leave the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer after five seasons, was the handpicked choice of the national team’s new general manager, Earnie Stewart. But his hiring did not become a done deal until U.S. Soccer’s board of directors approved his contract in a conference call Saturday.

Skiing: Austrian Max Franz conquered the snow and fog in Beaver Creek, Colo., for his first World Cup super-G victory in a tightly contested affair that resulted in five racers sharing the top three spots.

 Austria’s Nicole Schmidhofe­r won a World Cup downhill for the second straight day at Lake Louise, Alberta, ahead of teammate Cornelia Huetter and Switzerlan­d’s Michelle Gisin.
