Ovechkin delivers for Capitals again

Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 29th goal of the season to extend his point streak to a career-best 14 games and had the shootout winner to help the host Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Saturday for their fifth consecutiv­e victory.

Ovechkin has 17 goals during his point streak and has scored in six games in a row.

Brett Connolly and Jakub Vrana had the other goals in regulation for Washington.

“Such a threat, especially when he’s confident and he’s shooting the puck where he wants,” Connolly said of Ovechkin. “He’s a bull out there, it seems like he keeps getting better and better every year.”

Sabres captain Jack Eichel scored twice and Rasmus Dahlin had a power-play goal for Buffalo, whose two-game winning streak was snapped. Carter Hutton stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, including seven from Ovechkin.

Rantanen added two more on the power play and host Colorado recovered after blowing a three-goal lead. Landeskog, Matt Calvert and Rantanen staked Colorado to a 3-0 lead during a first period in which the Avalanche had two goals disallowed because of goaltender interferen­ce. Esa Lindell and Tyler Seguin brought Dallas back by scoring 44 seconds apart in the middle period. Seguin added another in the third and Jamie Benn tied it with 4:36 left.

Flames 2, Wild 1: Matthew Tkachuk scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period as visiting Calgary improved to 11-2-1 in its past 14 games. The game included three first-period fights, including one involving Minnesota’s Ryan Suter — his first since 2009.

Canadiens 5, Senators 2: Shea Weber scored the tie-breaking goal during Montreal’s four-goal third period as the host Canadiens beat Ottawa for the third time in 12 days. Each of Montreal’s recent wins against the Senators has been by a 5-2 score.

Panthers 4, Maple Leafs 3: Aleksander Barkov scored at 3:24 of overtime to complete his first NHL hat trick as host Florida snapped a fourgame skid. Toronto has lost four of its past five.

Islanders 4, Red Wings 3: Mathew Barzal scored on a power play in the third period and had the only goal in the shootout to lift host New York. The Islanders outshot the Red Wings 46-15 in regulation, before Detroit had a 6-2 advantage in overtime.

Penguins 4, Kings 3: Phil Kessel scored a power-play goal at 3:59 of overtime for host Pittsburgh. Matt Murray made 38 saves, including one on Tyler Toffoli’s overtime breakaway, for his first victory since Oct. 25.

Ducks 2, Blue Jackets 1: Daniel Sprong scored 1:19 into overtime to lift visiting Anaheim, which extended its winning streak to four by winning for the eighth time in nine games.

Predators 2, Devils 1: Ryan Johansen scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout as host Nashville won its third in a row. Juuse Saros made 33 saves through overtime and earned his first win since Nov. 10.

Canucks 5, Flyers 1: Brock Boeser notched a goal and an assist, leading host Vancouver over slumping Philadelph­ia. Chris Tanev, Loui Eriksson, Josh Leivo and Markus Granlund also scored for Vancouver (15-16-4), and Troy Stecher added a pair of assists. Scott Laughton responded for Philly (12-15-4). The loss was the second in two nights for the Flyers, capping a five-game road trip that saw the squad take just three points.

Briefly: Before their game against the Capitals, the Sabres suspended forward Patrick Berglund indefinite­ly for failing to report to the team. Berglund missed the previous two games with what coach Phil Housley called an illness . ... Oilers defenseman Oscar Klefbom, placed on injured reserve Wednesday, had finger surgery and is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks, the Canadian website Sportsnet reported . ... Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzo signed a threeyear, $4.125 million contract extension through the 2021-22 season.
