No. 18 Arizona State topples No. 1 Kansas

Rob Edwards scored 15 points, two coming on foul shots with 6.1 seconds left, as No. 18 Arizona State knocked off No. 1 Kansas 80-76 on Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz.

The No. 1 team drew a star-studded crowd, with Michael Phelps, Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Eddie House and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey among the third-largest crowd (14,592) in school history.

Arizona State (9-2) struggled to hit shots around the rim and to stop Kansas preseason All-American Dedric Lawson while falling behind by nine.

Like Arizona State did while beating Kansas (10-1) a year ago, the Sun Devils rallied late, using a 10-0 run to go up 76-74 with 90 seconds left.

Western Kentucky 71, St. Mary’s 68: Josh Anderson scored 18 points, including nine during a key stretch, and the host Hilltoppers (6-6) broke a two-game skid. Jordan Ford (28 points) made three consecutive layups to pull the Gaels (8-6) to 71-68 with 19 seconds left. St. Mary’s forced a turnover on Western Kentucky’s next possession, but Ford and Malik Fitts (26 points) each missed a layup, and Charles Bassey blocked Fitts’ jumper with two seconds to go. Fitts got his own rebound and passed to Tanner Krebs, who missed a three at the buzzer. #3 Tennessee 83, Wake Forest 64: Grant Williams had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Alexander added 19 points and eight rebounds as the host Volunteers (10-1) won their sixth in a row. Chaundee Brown scored 19 points to lead the Demon Deacons (6-4). #4 Michigan 71, Air Force 50: Iggy Brazdeikis scored 19 points and Charles Matthews added 17 as the host Wolverines beat the Falcons (4-7) to improve to 12-0 for the third time in school history.

#5 Virginia 72, William & Mary 40: De’Andre Hunter scored 18 points and Kyle Guy had 16 to lead the host Cavaliers (11-0) past the Tribe (4-8).

#6 Nevada 68, Akron 62: Caleb Martin and Jordan Caroline scored 19 points apiece, and Martin hit a threepointer with 45 seconds left to help the host Wolf Pack (12-0) fend off the Zips (7-5).

#7 Auburn 93, Murray State 88: Samir Doughty scored 20 points and Austin Wiley had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (10-2). Ja Morant led Murray State (8-2) with 25 points and eight rebounds. #19 Kentucky 80, #9 North Carolina 72: Keldon Johnson scored 23 points, former De La Salle High and Stanford forward Reid Travis added 20 for Kentucky in Chicago. Johnson scored 16 in the second half for the Wildcats (9-2). Cameron Johnson led North Carolina (8-3) with 17 points.

#11 Florida State 81, St. Louis 59: In Sunrise, Fla., David Nichols came off the bench to score 19 points and the Seminoles (11-1) shot a season-best 55 percent against the Billikens (8-4). #15 Ohio State 80, UCLA 66: In Chicago, C.J. Jackson scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half as the Buckeyes (11-1) dealt the Bruins (7-5) a third consecutive loss. #16 Wisconsin 84, Grambling State 53: Ethan Happ scored 19 points and had eight rebounds to lead the host Badgers (10-2) past the Tigers (6-7).

No. 17 Mississippi State 67, Wright State 63: Quinndary Weatherspoon scored 14 points, hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute, for the host Bulldogs (11-1). Bill Wampler scored 19 for the Raiders (6-7).

#22 Indiana 94, Jacksonville 64: Juwan Morgan had the second triple-double in Indiana history (10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). The host Hoosiers (11-2) won their sixth straight. The Dolphins fell to 7-7.

#23 Iowa 110, Savannah State 64: Joe Wieskamp scored 24 points and Jordan Bohannon added 18 as the host Hawkeyes (10-2) drubbed the Tigers (3-11).

#25 Nebraska 86, Cal State Fullerton 62: James Palmer Jr. scored 23 points to lead the host Cornhuskers (10-2) past the Titans (3-9).

Indiana State 72, Colorado 67: Jordan Barnes made five three-pointers and scored 19 points and the Sycamores (7-3) held off the Buffaloes (8-2) at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.

Arizona 70, UC Davis 68: Justin Coleman sank the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:03 to play to lift the Wildcats (9-4) at home. The Aggies (3-8) failed twice to tie or take the lead after Coleman’s three.

San Diego 82, Washington State 75: Isaiah Pineiro scored 30 points as the host Toreros (10-3) beat the Cougars (7-4).
