Adele Caroline Stone passed away on Dec. 16, 2018. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday on September 29, 2018. Preceded in death by her husband, Bernhard (Barney) Stone, Adele is survived by her son Craig (Joan) and her daughter Donna (David). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Megan and Colin (Becca).

Adele was born and raised in San Francisco, attended Lowell High School, and graduated from UC Berkeley in May, 1941. She met Barney at Cal in her freshman year and they married in June 1941. She was a devoted Cal Bear fan and spent many “Week 10’s” at UC’s wonderful summer family camp, Lair of the Bear, in Pinecrest. Adele and Barney moved to Redwood City in 1955 where they raised their family. Adele lived in the family home for 63 years until her death.

Adele was very proud of her career as an elementary school teacher in Redwood City. She loved being a teacher and was proud that both her daughter and granddaughter also chose careers in education. On her 100th birthday, a number of former students wrote to say she had been their favorite teacher. One former student wrote, “I’ve thought of you many times over the years. You didn’t just teach classes, you taught us life lessons.” Adele continued to light up whenever she talked about teaching, well into her later years.

In retirement, Adele enjoyed volunteering at Filoli, gardening, traveling, fishing, needlework, her dear dog Brumis, her many friends and neighbors…and being a very devoted and loving grandma to Megan and Colin.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Adele’s name to Healthy Cities Tutoring (www. healthycitiestutoring.org), or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life will be held on December 28 from 4-7 pm. For details, email: donna.becht@gmail.com.
