Adela Theresa Bishop, of Oakland, CA, was surrounded by friends and family in her final days.
She joins her loving husband, William Henry Bishop, who passed away in March of 2011. They now rest at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. She leaves behind her loving children, Paul, Teesha, and Joseph Bishop, and her beloved grandchild, Omega Rae. Adela was an active member of the Oakland community and the Oakland Catholic Diocese.
In the late 1960s, she formed a folk music group, The Imediate, for church services in her parish. She was a founding member of a local co-housing community. Adela held a BA in Physical Education from the University of California, Berkeley and a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from California State University East Bay. She had been the director of Oakland’s Sequoia Nursery School, taught Special Education for the Alameda School District, and provided guidance to aspiring Special Education teachers through National University. She was an avid world traveler, scuba diver, skier, runner, and racquetball enthusiast. Through her publishing company, Garnet Inc., she authored a number of children’s books, most notably “The Easter Wolf: an Easter Fable” and “The Christmas Polar Bear.”
A celebration of her life will be held at The Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street, Oakland, CA on January 27, 2019 at 2:30pm. A gift to one of her favorite charities, Environmental Defense Fund, is appreciated in lieu of flowers.
