Alexander H. Schilling

Better known as ‘Mike’ to family and friends, he was born in San Francisco as the youngest son of Rudolph and Alexandra Schilling and was raised in Woodside and San Francisco. He attended Woodside Elementary School, Town School, Cate School and MIT and served as an agent with the Army Counterint­elligence Corps in Germany during the Cold War. He returned to Boston where he met Barbara Hall from Rhode Island. They were married in 1957, returned to California and raised two sons in Atherton. In 1958 Mike joined Ampex where he followed a career in Engineerin­g Administra­tion and Marketing before he became President of a family investment company founded by his grandfathe­r. He was widowed in 1992. Mike married Dianne Pitts of Atherton in 1993 and they moved to Portola Valley where they establishe­d a welcoming home for their blended family. He enjoyed being a jack-of-alltrades while improving their property. Mike also served on the town’s Architectu­ral and Site Control Commission while still continuing to be involved with family business. Mike and Dianne enjoyed travelling to Africa, Europe, Asia and many parts of the Western Hemisphere.

Mike is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dianne; his two sons, Alexander “Andy” Schilling, Jr. (Leslie) and Robert Schilling; three granddaugh­ters, Alexandra, Lauren and Elizabeth Schilling; two step children, Janet Pitts Maher (Donald) and Jim Pitts; and two step grandchild­ren, Kristen and Matt Maher.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 19, at 1:30PM at the Woodside Priory Chapel, 302 Portola Road, Portola Valley. Memorial contributi­ons may be made to The Peninsula Open Space Trust or a charity of your choice.
