Giants get versatile Valera from Orioles

- — John Shea

The Giants added versatility to their 40-man roster on Saturday by acquiring infielder-outfielder Breyvic Valera from the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations.

Valera, who turns 27 on Tuesday, could be given a chance to win a utility job. The Venezuelan has played mostly second base in pro ball but has been used at most positions. He began last season with the Dodgers, so he’ll be reunited with Farhan Zaidi, the Giants’ new president of baseball operations.

The switch-hitting Valera played 20 games for the Dodgers and hit .172 before being dealt to Baltimore in July as part of the Manny Machado trade. With the Orioles, Valera hit .286 in 12 games. He was designated for assignment Friday.

Valera, who broke into the majors with the 2017 Cardinals, has fared well in two Triple-A seasons, hitting .301 with a .368 on-base percentage and 17 home runs.  Reliever Zach Britton agreed to a three-year, $39 million deal to remain with the New York Yankees. Britton, 31, was acquired by the Yankees from Baltimore on July 24 and had a 2.88 ERA and three saves in 25 appearances for New York.

 The New York Mets acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers for former A’s reliever Bobby Wahl and two minor-leaguers, righthanded reliever Adam Hill and infielder Felix Valerio.
