Fill-in shuts out Canucks
Just over a week ago, Michael Hutchinson was battling to get back into the NHL. Now, he’s filling a key need for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Hutchinson stopped 28 shots for his first shutout in more than two years, Auston Matthews had a goal and two assists, and the Maple Leafs beat the visiting Vancouver Canucks 5-0 Saturday night.
Hutchinson was playing for Springfield in the American Hockey League when he was acquired from Florida last weekend with Toronto starter Frederik Anderson (groin) and backup Garret Sparks (concussion) still sidelined.
“It’s hard to imagine,” Hutchinson said of how much his life changed in only eight days. “Being in Springfield, you don’t know where your season’s going and how things are going to turn out.”
Kings 4, Oilers 0: Jonathan Quick made 16 saves for his 51st career shutout and 300th career victory and Anze Kopitar scored his 300th career goal for host Los Angeles.
Islanders 4, Blues 3: Jordan Eberle and Johnny Boychuk scored 11 seconds apart in the third period to help New York rally in St. Louis. Anders Lee and Matt Martin also scored for the Islanders, who won their sixth in a row.
Predators 4, Canadiens 1: Craig Smith scored two goals and Nashville won in Montreal. Juuse Saros stopped 27 shots in place of Pekka Rinne.
Blue Jackets 4, Panthers 3: Seth Jones scored 18 seconds into overtime and Columbus triumphed in Florida. Brandon Dubinsky, Josh Anderson and Anthony Duclair also scored goals for the Blue Jackets.
Bruins 2, Sabres 1: Chris Wagner and David Backes scored, Tuukka Rask stopped 31 shots and Boston won at home for its fourth straight victory.
Flames 3, Flyers 2: TJ Brodie scored 1 minute, 59 seconds into overtime after Matthew Tkachuk tied it with 4:17 left in regulation to lead Calgary to a road victory.
Wild 4, Senators 3: Jared Spurgeon scored twice to lead Minnesota in Ottawa.
