Mira Margaret Mitchell Pereira

-

Margaret was born Dec. 1919 and passed away peacefully Dec. 2018 at 99 years old. She was a descendant of Denis and Margaret (Casey) Mahoney who established a ranch in San Francisco in 1849, grandparents William Casey and Mary (Bergin) Mahoney, parents Robert and Mira (Mahoney) Mitchell. A fourth generation San Franciscan, she was born and raised in this beautiful city. Margaret attended St. Vincent de Paul, Bates High School for Girls and two years of college. Her first job was at PG&E and during WWII she gave the most pints of blood and became the Purple Heart Queen in the city.

Married in 1954 to Major Anthony M. Pereira, USAF, she enjoyed the life of a military wife. She traveled the world and loved the five years spent in Japan and the Philippines. Even during 20 years of traveling, San Francisco was always home base. We always sang the “San Francisco here we come” song every time we came back. Margaret was pre-deceased by her two sisters Mary Bergin Wallace and Virginia Mitchell, her loving husband Tony and her devoted daughter Mira L. Pereira. Mira left behind her husband Kevin and two daughters, Kristina and Marisa Pereira Tully. Margaret had a wonderful relationship with her daughter Mary Ellen. They spent endless time together and truly enjoyed each others company. She will be terribly missed by Mary Ellen, husband Heinz Hofmann, their children Bobby, Katherine, Jacqueline and Jacqueline’s children, great granddaughters Jewell and Jade Alivia. Margaret loved her family and friends dearly. Following retirement, Margaret and Tony’s favorite pastime was taking cruises around the world. She was gracious, kind, loving and had a wonderful sense of humor. She made friends easily and had the most wonderful manners! She was a devoted friend of the Daughters of Charity. There were many sisters but Sister Ester and Sister Paula became close life long friends. She loved to visit the sisters in their retirement in Los Altos Hills, she said it was a little slice of heaven!

Margaret worked for 30 years in administration at John Adams Adult Community College. She spent the last 18 years living at the Heritage on the Marina, close to where she grew up in Pacific Heights, looking out at the bay and across from Funston Park where she and her sisters played basketball.

We thank all of the nurses, assistants and staff at the Heritage for their exemplary care and love for my mother.
