JOSHUA KOSMAN’S CLASSICAL MUSIC PICK

-

One of the most exciting musical developments in recent years has been the gradual rediscovery of the work of composer and performer Julius Eastman, a pioneering quasi-minimalist and boundarystretching original who died penniless and alone in 1990. It’s daring, provocative and often thrilling music, infused with a politics of race and sexuality.

San Francisco composer and pianist Luciano Chessa has been active in reclaiming Eastman’s ambitious legacy, and he presents a sampler of that music this weekend along with pianists Sarah Cahill , Regina Myers and Chris Brown , and vocalists Kevin Baum and Richard Mix .

On the program are “Crazy N—,” Eastman’s tour de force for four pianos, as well as “Our Father” and “Hail Mary.”
