Santa Clara women win in 3 OTs; Hay has 30

Tia Hay took over in the third overtime Saturday, scoring nine of her 30 points down the stretch, as Santa Clara beat host Loyola Marymount 83-75.

“Tia carried us today,” Santa Clara head coach Bill Carr said. “She made big shot after big shot and defended.”

It was the first time in program history that Santa Clara went to three overtimes.

Ashlyn Herlihy added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos (9-7, 2-3 WCC). Bree Alford and Chelsey Gipson each scored 18 points for the Lions (10-8, 3-3).

“We did a much better job tonight of handling the highs and lows of a game,” Carr said. “We handled their runs better than we have in the last couple games, which was good to see.”

BYU 74, St. Mary’s 73: Paisley Johnson scored 25 points and Shaylee Gonzales added 20 for the visiting Cougars (14-3, 6-0 WCC). Sam Simons and Megan McKay each scored 16 points for the Gaels (7-7, 2-3).

Pepperdine 69, USF 50: Yasmine Robinson-Bacote had 22 points and eight rebounds as the host Waves (10-6, 4-2 WCC) beat the Dons (5-11, 1-4), who were led by Shannon Powell’s 11 points and seven rebounds.

Boise State 99, San Jose State 68: Rachels Bowers’ 16 points led four players in double figures for the host Broncos (12-2, 3-0 Mountain West). Raziya Potter scored 14 points for the Spartans (1-13, 0-3).

Fitts, Ford lead St. Mary’s to win

Malik Fitts and Jordan Ford scored 18 points each, Jordan Hunder had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his third doubledoub­le of the season, and St. Mary’s beat host Loyola Marymount 71-60.

Tanner Krebs added 16 points for the Gaels (11-7, 2-1 WCC), who opened the game with a 12-0 run and led 39-14 before going into the break with a 45-26 lead.

Eli Scott had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Mattias Markusson added 12 points for the Lions (13-4, 1-2).

BYU 80, Santa Clara 74: Yoeli Childs scored 27 points and the host Cougars (11-8, 3-1) were 24-for-34 from the foul line in a win over the Broncos (10-8, 2-2). Freshman Trey Wertz scored 20 points to lead four Santa Clara players in double figures. BYU did not trail and had its largest lead of the second half at 51-39 before Santa Clara cut its deficit to three. A 3pointer from TJ Haws with 1:33 left gave the Cougars breathing room.

Boise State 87, San Jose State 64: Alex Hobbs and Pat Dembley scored 18 points apiece for the visiting Broncos (8-8, 3-0 Mountain West). Oumar Barry scored 16 points to lead the Spartans (3-12, 0-3).
