Sister Eileen Canelo, PBVM
Sister Eileen Canelo, PBVM, (religious name Sister Mary Jerome) entered eternal life on January 9, 2019 at the Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco. A native of San Francisco, California, Sister Eileen was born on January 20, 1927. She was a loving daughter of Eileen Marie Costello Canelo and Adolph Briones Canelo who passed away when she was a child. She was also predeceased by her brothers James and Adolph. She will be missed by her devoted nieces and nephews, Eileen Canelo Sweeney, Christine Canelo, Katie Canelo, Deacon Kelly Canelo, Christopher Canelo, “Jimmer” Canelo, and Vince Canelo as well as her loving Presentation Sisters and Associates.
While her nieces and nephews were devoted to her, she in turn had a special place in her heart for each one as well as their families.
Sister Eileen was a Sister of the Presentation for 74 years having entered on January 5, 1945.
She earned a B.S. degree in Education from the University of San Francisco and had a California Lifetime Credential. For fifty-eight years she was lovingly involved in Catholic elementary education, teaching in schools in San Francisco, Berkeley, Gilroy, San Jose, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Seattle, Washington. From 1972 to 2012 Sister Eileen taught at Epiphany School, San Francisco as a classroom teacher, and is fondly remembered as a music teacher and reading resource instructor there. She became an ESL Program Volunteer from 2012 until 2015 at The Lantern Center in the Mission District of San Francisco.
Since 2009 Sister Eileen has lived at the Motherhouse Care Center where she had also been engaged in the ministry of prayer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for her at the Presentation Motherhouse on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
