CLAUDIA BAUER’S DANCE PICK

-

The holidays may be over, but Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will arrive in Berkeley on Friday, Jan. 18, bearing gifts: nine contemporary works by international choreographers, plus a squad of exquisite dancers to interpret them. Hubbard’s repertoire is broad, deep and refreshingly varied, and their two Zellerbach Hall programs range from a recent commission by 24-year-old commercialdance superstar Emma Portner to Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato’s “Jardi Tancat,” created a decade before Portner was born.

Duato shares Program 1 with William Forsythe’s “N.N.N.N.,” Alejandro Cerrudo’s “Lickety-Split” and Crystal Pite’s “Grace Engine.” Pite, of Vancouver, is one of the most sought-after dance makers today, but her work is rarely seen in the Bay Area (Cal Performances staged her “Betroffenheit” in 2017); fortunately, Hubbard put her “Solo Echo” on Program 2. Also on that bill are Portner and her commercial comrade Teddy Forance, both with original music by Dev Hynes and performed live by Third Coast Percussion, plus Ohad Naharin’s “Decadance/Ignore” and Cerrudo’s “Pacopepepluto.” The weekend’s playlist also includes Devendra Banhart, Arvo Pärt, Thom Willems, Brahms and Dean Martin.
