MICK LASALLE’S MOVIE PICK

-

The writing, directing and producing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger were responsible for a number of great and distinctive British films (among them “The Red Shoes”), but the 1945 effort “I Know Where I’m Going!” — starring Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey — might be their best. Hiller plays a strong-willed personality, who is traveling to the Scottish Hebrides, where she plans to marry a wealthy old lord.

But weather (or is it something else, something magical?) keeps delaying the completion of her journey. And along the way she meets Livesey. This is a film unlike others, and therefore hard to describe, but it has a special quality to it, a combination of wisdom, humor, romanticism and humanity.

It deserves to be seen. Or, to put it another way, you deserve to see it.
