JOHN MCMURTRIE’S BOOKS PICK
Past, present and possible presidential candidates (Chris Christie, Kamala Harris and Howard Schultz, respectively) all have new memoirs out. Not looking for any of them?
The California International Antiquarian Book Fair might be more to your liking. The 52nd annual event — one of the largest of its kind in the world — amasses rare and valuable books that have stood the test of time, becoming treasures. The weekend fair at the Oakland Marriott City Center wraps up Sunday, Feb. 10.
More than 200 booksellers will be on hand from roughly 30 countries. Notable books on display will include works by L. Frank Baum, author of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and its sequels. Also for sale: titles from the venerable Book Club of California, founded in 1912, as well as a first edition of Ansel Adams’ first book.
Or, if you have a spare $40,000, there’s always a crayon drawing by Pablo Picasso, signed by the artist.
California International Antiquarian Book Fair: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. $15; free for students. Oakland Convention Center, 1001 Broadway, Oakland. www.cabookfair.com
