Flyers are able to reign in rain in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux scored 1:59 into overtime and the host Flyers scored three straight goals in the rain to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Saturday night at Lincoln Financial Field.

The Flyers and Penguins took one of the NHL’s more heated rivalries outdoors and into prime time as part of the Stadium Series showcase. The rink that stretched from 30-yard line to 30yard line needed a squeegee more than a Zamboni, but nearly 70,000 fans stuck around the home of the Eagles to watch the Flyers play the marquee game on their schedule.

With rain pounding the ice in the third period, the Flyers got going. James van Riemsdyk cut the Penguins’ lead to 3-2 on a power-play goal with 3:04 left before Jake Voracek tied it at 3-all with 19.7 seconds left to send what was left of the sellout crowd into a frenzy.

Giroux made sure the game didn’t last much longer. He slipped the winner past Matt Murray, and the Flyers celebrated in the mist. Giroux said he felt “goosebumps” after scoring in the clutch in his 800th career game.

“I was able to get a step on their D and squeak in my goal,” Giroux said.

Panthers 6, Kings 1: Aleksander Barkov and Keith Yandle scored on the power play and host Florida had three goals in the second period on the way to a rout. Florida’s Roberto Luongo stopped 18 shots and tied Ed Belfour for third place in career wins among goaltenders with 484. Avalanche 5, Predators 0: Philipp Grubauer made 38 saves for his first shutout of the season, helping visiting Colorado to its fourth straight victory.

Blues 2, Bruins 1: Sammy Blais scored in the sixth round of the shootout and Alexander Steen scored in regulation as host St. Louis snapped Boston’s seven-game winning streak.

Hurricanes 3, Stars 0: Curtis McElhinney made 14 of his 24 saves in the third period to wrap up his 10th career shutout, and visiting Carolina blanked Dallas — the Hurricanes’ fourth shutout in 10 games.

Islanders 4, Canucks 0: Robin Lehner stopped 36 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as visiting New York dealt Vancouver its third consecutive loss.

Oilers 2, Ducks 1: Mikko Koskinen made 33 saves and host Edmonton won its second in a row following a five-game skid.

Sabres 5, Capitals 2: Sam Reinhart had a hat trick and host Buffalo snapped a fourgame skid. Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 44th goal for Washington, while extending his goal streak to five games.

Maple Leafs 6, Canadiens 3: Zach Hyman scored two goals and William Nylander and Auston Matthews each had a goal and an assist as host Toronto overcame a three-goal deficit to snap a three-game losing streak.

Rangers 5, Devils 2: Ryan Strome had two goals and Chris Kreider and Jimmy Vesey each had a goal and an assist for the host Rangers.

Briefly: The Stars acquired forward Mats Zuccarello from the Rangers for a conditional second-round draft pick this year and a conditional thirdround pick in the 2010 draft. Zuccarello had 113 goals and 239 assists in 509 games over parts of nine seasons in New York, including 11 goals and 26 assists in 46 games this season . ... Dallas also got defenseman Ben Lovejoy from the Devils in a deal that sent defenseman Connor Carrick and a third-round pick to New Jersey.
