After a too-rapid expansion in its early years led to a stumble, the San Francisco-based online grocer hatched a new plan for online food delivery in 2017 by appealing to everyday grocery shoppers: It added more everyday products, including wine, as well as dinner kits. The company also offers a solid line-up of prepared meals and meal components — a range of cooked proteins like roasted chicken, barbecued pork and poached salmon, as well as vegetables and starches, like mashed potatoes, sauteed greens and marinated beets — from its commissary kitchen that require minimal to no prep.

Order: Sesame chicken salad ($9.99) with shredded cabbage, satsuma mandarin orange segments and crunchy ramen noodles for garnish; winter kale Caesar salad ($9.99) with shredded sousvide chicken and roasted golden beets.

Packaging: Dressings came in compostable containers; salad tubs are recyclable. Other accompaniments, like the croutons, ramen noodles and grated cheese, were stored in separate plastic baggies. Logo cardboard boxes can be returned to the company upon your next delivery so they can be reused. Ditto for recycling cold sleeves used to keep deliveries chilled.

Delivery details: Ordering is a breeze with the smartphone app. The rub: Order minimum is $30. The delivery fee ($9.99) is waived with orders over $60. No tip required or expected, as the company adds a $3.99 fee to every order to pay employees a living wage. Deliveries can be scheduled for next day or further out in 2-hour delivery windows from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Same day delivery is also available for no extra fee when ordered by 1 p.m. Available throughout the Bay Area.

Grade: A Produce was incredibly fresh, components were bountiful, and flavors balanced and well seasoned. In flavor and selection, these are the salads to beat, especially if you get them as part of a bigger grocery order to avoid a delivery fee.
