1. Clos du Val
Noble, historic Clos du Val in Stags Leap District, whose Cabernet Sauvignon placed high in the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, has recently gone through an extensive renovation of its tasting room, creating a light, open and airy space that overlooks its vineyards. The experiences have been elevated, too. The Social Circle tasting, featuring current and library wines ($35), is a hosted seating for up to 12 people. The Family First experience ($125 for two) includes lunch with a picnic basket and wine set on a table in the olive grove. for peaceful tastings. Wines are made from vines grown in the exquisite estate soils, the vine rows mowed by resident sheep. Founded by Leslie Rudd, who died in 2018, the property is being guided now by his daughter, Samantha Rudd, who came home to run the family business after a stint at Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux. Visits ($125) are by appointment only and well worth the time. They include a deep look at the property’s organic and biodynamic vineyard farming practices, time in the gardens, winery and fermentation rooms, and seated tasting by the lake or in the wood-paneled library overlooking the vineyards. Rudd makes Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
4. Quintessa
One of the few biodynamic sites in the Napa Valley, Quintessa is tucked into 160 acres in Rutherford, where it farms predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. Surrounding acres of woodland shield it from the rest of the busy valley. Quintessa makes one wine from the estate, which may include small amounts of other estate red Bordeaux varieties. The Quintessential Experience ($150), in one of the winery’s well-appointed vineyard pavilions, includes barrel samples and library selections, with a walk through the caves and gravity flow winery.
5. Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil
It would be a shame to drive along the Silverado Trail and not take advantage of the view from the Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil, which recently received its 13th consecutive Michelin star. The exquisite resort welcomes guests to the restaurant for locally sourced meals, an extensive wine list and a bistro bar for more casual dining and drinks.
6. Joseph Phelps Vineyards
Quietly tucked into the eastern hills along the Silverado Trail, off Taplin Road, is historic Joseph Phelps Vineyards, one of the legends of the Napa Valley. Most famous for its iconic proprietary Bordeaux blend, Insignia, it also makes a selection of beautiful coastal Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from estate vineyards it farms in Sonoma County’s coastal town of Freestone. Whatever you come to taste, enjoy the recently renovated winery space, with plenty of outside terrace tables and vineyard views.
