What is the Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival?

-

The Noise Pop Music and Arts Festival started in 1993 with just one overcapacity show at the former Kennel Club on Divisadero Street (now the Independent), featuring five bands for $5. The annual festival for lovers of independent music, art and culture has grown considerably since. It now features more than 150 eclectic acts performing over two weeks in a variety of Bay Area venues. There are also occasional music-related film screenings, art shows, industry panels, gatherings and just general excuses to party on a school night.

While its lifeblood is still distorted, melody-driven rock fueled by punk values, each year the organizers make room for a broader stylistic range.

“There’s always something we haven’t done before,” says festival founder Kevin Arnold. “Everybody across the team has a great grasp of what’s cutting-edge — and even stuff that already exists in the Noise Pop world is constantly being reinvented and rethought.”

Throughout the year, the team behind Noise Pop also books the Treasure Island Music Festival, 20th Street Block Party and music at the historic Swedish American Hall.

Who’s playing in 2019?

The 27th annual Noise Pop festival is highlighted by former Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould, a solo appearance by Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes, the esoteric pop band Beirut, Scottish indie heroes Teenage Fanclub and the worldly R&B singer Yuna.

Music fans will also be able to once again catch sets by countless buzz bands at venues throughout the city, long before they start filling arenas like past Noise Pop headliners such as the White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie and Modest Mouse.

This year’s must-see acts include Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Baths, Current Joys, VHS Collection, Caroline Rose, My Brightest Diamond, Mndsgn, Helado Negro and others. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of them yet — you will.

Promoters are constantly adding new shows. For the most updated lineup, visit the festival website.
