College swimming: Cal men win sixth NCAA title
Cal won its sixth NCAA men’s swimming and diving championship Saturday night in Austin, Texas, beating second-place Texas 560475. The Longhorns had won four straight national titles.
Senior Andrew Seliskar ended his Bears career with four national titles — three in this meet. He set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke Saturday night, a win that sealed the title for Cal.
Seliskar also combined with Pawel Sendyk, Ryan Hoffer and Michael Jensen to close out the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay. Their time of 2:26.41 set a school record.
It’s the fourth national title for Cal under head coach David Durden, the first since 2014.
Stanford finished 15th.
Tennis: Ashleigh Barty had 15 aces and beat Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the final of the Miami Open. The 22-year-old Australian, who was seeded 12th, won her fourth title and the biggest of her career. She improved to 18-3 this year and will rise to a career-high ranking of No. 9 next week.
Barty is the 33rd player to win a title in as many ATP and WTA tournaments this year
“Amazing, isn’t it?” Barty said. “On the women’s side, I think the level has evened out a lot, and the depth has grown over the last few years. Everyone in the draw has a legitimate chance of winning the tournament, and you try to make the most of it.”
Roger Federer could become tennis’ first repeat champion this year when he plays John Isner in the men’s final Sunday. Federer won in Dubai early this month.
Colleges: Nebraska hired former Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg to lead its men’s basketball program. The Cornhuskers fired seventh-year coach Tim Miles after finishing 19-17. Hoiberg, fired by the Bulls in December, agreed to a seven-year contract for $25 million. Hoiberg’s grandfather, Jerry Bush, was the Cornhuskers’ coach from 1954 to 1963.
Kansas guard Charlie Moore has decided to transfer for the second time. He began his collegiate career at Cal.
Auto racing: Kyle Busch has a chance at a NASCAR tripleheader sweep at Texas. Busch rocketed in front on the final restart with six laps remaining to win the Xfinity race Saturday. He won the trucks race on Friday and will start 16th in the Cup race today.
NFL: The mayor of Nashville said the city is not going to cut down 21 ornamental cherry trees to make space for an NFL draft stage. The trees will be removed intact and replanted in the city.
