Winless Quakes shut out by L.A. as Vela has hat trick
The San Jose Earthquakes’ poor start to the MLS season continued Saturday with a 5-0 loss to visiting Los Angeles FC.
The Quakes, who fired head coach Mikael Stahre near the end of last season on the way to a 4-21-9 record, fell to 0-4-0 under new coach Matias Almeyda.
San Jose managed just six shots, 14 fewer than their opponent, and has been outscored 14-2 in their four matches.
Carlos Vela had a hat trick for Los Angeles. He has six goals and three assists in five games this season.
LAFC (4-0-1) also got goals from Diego Rossi and former San Jose defender Steven Beitashour.
San Jose and Vancouver are the only MLS teams without a point this season.

A video replay decision in extra time cost the Vancouver Whitecaps a chance for a penalty kick in a 0-0 tie with the visiting Seattle Sounders.
The wild sequence began when Vancouver’s Joaquin Ardaiz took a shot that was stopped by goalkeeper Stefan Frei. The ball rolled to the Whitecaps’ Hwang In-Beom, whose shot was blocked again by a diving Frei. After the play, In-Beom’s legs were taken out from underneath him on a sliding tackle by Seattle’s Kim Kee-hee.
At first, referee Robert Sibiga ruled a yellow card against Kee-hee, which would have set up a penalty kick. The call was reversed after a video replay review, though. Krisztian Nemeth scored three goals and Johnny Russell scored twice in Sporting Kansas City’s 7-1 victory over the visiting Montreal Impact.
David Ousted had his first shutout since the 2017 season and Chicago beat visiting New York 1-0 for its first victory of the season.
Jalil Anibaba and Brandon Bye scored to help New England to its first win of the season, a 2-1 decision over visiting Minnesota.
Marco Fabian and David Accam scored goals in the second half and the Philadelphia Union won 2-0 at FC Cincinnati.
Gyasi Zardes scored in his return from international duty to help the Columbus Crew beat visiting Atlanta United 2-0 in a match slowed down by soggy field conditions.
Memo Rodriguez scored, Colorado put two in its own goal, and the visiting Houston Dynamo won their third straight, beating the Rapids 4-1. Paxton Pomykal scored two goals and visiting FC Dallas beat 10-man Real Salt Lake 4-2.
England: Huddersfield has been relegated from the English Premier League. The last-place team’s fate was sealed with six games remaining after a 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace. Huddersfield has matched the record for the earliest relegation set by Derby in 2008 . ... Manchester City is back on top after beating Fulham 2-0 . ... Everton claimed its first success in London since January 2017, beating West
Ham 2-0.
Spain: Lionel Messi picked up from where he left off before the international break, leading Barcelona to another Spanish league victory. After struggling for Argentina yet again, Messi returned to Barcelona and scored twice in a 2-0 win over Espanyol in Madrid.
Italy: Moise Kean can’t seem to miss lately. Days after scoring two goals in his first two starts for Italy, the 19-year-old Kean came off the bench to secure injury-depleted Juventus a 1-0 win over visiting Empoli. Kean is the youngest player to score eight Serie A goals since Mario Balotelli accomplished the feat at the age of 18.
Germany: Paco Alcacer scored twice in injury time as Borussia Dortmund reclaimed the Bundesliga lead with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg while Bayern Munich was held in Freiburg to 1-1. It was the end of Bayern’s six-game winning run in the league, and it allowed Dortmund to seize the lead by two points ahead of the sides’ potentially league-deciding clash in Munich next weekend.
France: Strasbourg won the French League Cup for the third time, defeating Guingamp 4-1 in a penalty shootout after a goalless tie . ... Marseille wasted a two-goal lead through Balotelli in the first 16 minutes and was held by Angers to a 2-2 tie at home. With eight games left, Marseille’s latest disappointing result left it eight points behind third-placed Lyon, and with little hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
