Undefeated Davies, Brewers top Pirates
Zach Davies became the first Milwaukee starter to win his first seven decisions in a season, hanging on for five innings Saturday before the Brewers’ bullpen finished off a 5-3 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ryan Braun had an RBI single in the fourth that put the Brewers ahead to stay. Mike Moustakas hit his 19th home run and pinchhitter Manny Pina added a late homer. Milwaukee moved a season-high nine games over .500 and beat the Pirates for the fifth time in six games this year.
Davies (7-0) gave up seven hits and left with a 4-3 lead. Four relievers blanked the Pirates on one hit, with Josh Hader striking out the side in the ninth for his 15th save.
Tigers 9, Twins 3: JaCoby Jones homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs in Detroit’s win over visiting Minnesota. Christin Stewart also homered for the Tigers, who had lost three straight and 13 of 14 at Comerica Park.
Cubs 9, Cardinals 4: Pinchhitter Victor Caratini hit a tie-breaking bases-loaded double in Chicago’s four-run sixth inning in a win over visiting St. Louis. Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester was hit hard early, allowing all four St. Louis runs in the first inning on homers.
Red Sox, Rays split: In the first game of a doubleheader in Boston, Ryan Yarbrough held the Red Sox to an unearned run into the eighth inning and Travis d’Arnaud hit a three-run homer in Tampa Bay’s 9-2 win. In the nightcap, David Price made his 300th career start, pitching six solid innings, and Marco Hernández hit a key two-run double in his first major-league start in over two years as Boston won 5-1.
Angels 12, Mariners 3: Shohei Ohtani homered and singled in his first three majorconsecutive league at-bats against countryman Yusei Kikuchi and Los Angeles won at home. Ohtani’s fourth-inning homer was the Angels’ third in four pitches off Kikuchi. Mike Trout, Tommy La Stella and Cesar Puello also homered in that span.
White Sox 2, Royals 0: Lucas Giolito worked into the eighth inning and had a career-high 11 strikeouts to win his seventh start, outdueling Brad Keller as Chicago won in Kansas City. Giolito allowed three hits and two walks in 72⁄3 innings.
D’backs 6, Blue Jays 0: Zack Greinke and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, Alex Avila and Kevin Cron hit solo home runs and Arizona topped visiting Toronto.
Mets 5, Rockies 3: Steven Matz struck out 10, rookie Pete Alonso hit his 21st home run and New York won at home. Matz threw 120 pitches, matching his career high, in six innings.
Phillies 4, Reds 1: Nick Pivetta struck out six in his first career complete game and Jay Bruce had a two-run single as Philadelphia beat visiting Cincinnati. Pivetta allowed six hits in his third start since his demotion to the minors. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA since being recalled from Triple-A.
Orioles 4, Astros 1: Renato Nuñez hit his 16th homer, Richie Martin added a two-run shot in the ninth and visiting Baltimore snapped a threegame skid.
Indians 8, Yankees 4: Rookie Oscar Mercado hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia to break a fifth-inning tie and Cleveland defeated visiting New York. Roberto Perez homered in his fourth straight game for Cleveland. The Indians have won four of five on their homestand against AL division leaders New York and Minnesota.
Braves 1, Marlins 0: Julio Teheran pitched six sharp innings and rookie Austin Riley scored the only run as Atlanta won in Miami. The Braves won despite getting only three hits and improved to 5-0 this season at Marlins Park. Miami had just four hits.
Nationals 4, Padres 1: Brian Dozier hit his 10th home run, a two-run shot, as Washington won in San Diego.
Briefly: A day after returning from a lower back strain that landed him on the injured list, Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland went back on the IL because of a right quadriceps strain . ... Catcher Erik Kratz, who began the season with the Giants, signed a minorleague deal with the Yankees. Kratz was released Wednesday by the Rays, who acquired him from San Francisco on May 16.
