An abundant garden of bold musical ideas
As the days get longer and summer announces its intention to stick around for a while, the Bay Area’s music aficionados look expectantly toward the solstice. That’s because the longest day of the year is the occasion for Garden of Memory, the riotous musical miscellany assembled by pianist and newmusic impresario Sarah Cahill.
It’s a walk-through pleasure palace, with performers arrayed unpredictably around Oakland’s Chapel of the Chimes, taking turns and rotating in shifts so that there’s always something new waiting for you around any given corner. Big ensemble performances resonate through large central spaces, while intimate experimental setups occupy alcoves and side rooms.
Among the long list of performers scheduled to appear this year are Duo B, Living Earth Show, Dan Plonsey with Goggle Plex, Gino Robair and Tom Djill, Chris Brown, Amy X Neuberg and Cahill herself – a veritable catalog of local newmusic aristocracy.
