RYAN KOST’S OFF-THE-RADAR PICK

-

There’s something tangible about the music Ramona Gonzalez makes.

Better known as Nite Jewel, Gonzalez has been spending the past decade lending her voice and incredible talent to several genres. Sometimes her sound flirts with disco; other times it’s a softer, chiller, shoegaze vibe. She stretches, too, into ‘90s R&B when the mood strikes her.

Her work has occasionally found her alongside acts like the Chromatics and Glass Candy, two bands that hold a similar nostalgic space in music. And yet Gonzalez always sounds like herself, and only herself. That’s due, in part, to the fact that she does most of the songwriting and also her dedication to recording on an eight-track cassette recorder, which she uses to layer her songs with analog synths and drum machines.

Gonzalez’s synth-y, lo-fi sounds would be reason enough to get out of the house for some live music. But if you go, absolutely be sure to get there early for the first act. Tieraney Carter, better known as Wizard Apprentice, is a supremely talented electronic musician, one who deftly straddles the space between the dance floor and someplace a little more ethereal.

These two acts are a perfect match for a beautiful night.

Nite Jewel: 8 p.m. Saturday, June 22. $15 day of show. Starline Social Club, 2236 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland. www.starlinesocialclub.com
