Quakes use late goal to beat Real Salt Lake

-

Danny Hoesen scored in the third minute of secondhalf stoppage time to give the host San Jose Earthquakes a 10 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.

Paul Marie took Cristian Espinoza’s short corner, drove it into the area and sent a cross into the area. Hoesen finished it with a roundhouse kick.

Daniel Vega had five saves for the Earthquakes for his sixth shutout.

Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando made two saves as he became the first player to appear in 500 MLS regularseason games.

More MLS: Carlos Vela scored twice and host Los Angeles FC rallied to a clubrecord six goals after giving up the opening score, beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 61.

Vela, with 19 goals on the season, extended his lead to six goals ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the MLS Golden Boot race. LAFC, in its second year, became the quickest franchise to reach 100 points.

Yordy Reyna took advantage of a goalkeeping error to open the scoring in the fifth minute for the Whitecaps. But Vancouver’s Andy Rose knocked in an LAFC corner for an own goal that leveled the score in the 35th minute. Nicolas Lodeiro scored his second goal in the sixth minute of secondhalf stoppage time to lift the visiting Seattle Sounders over the Columbus Crew 21 . ... Yohan Croizet scored in the 14th minute and host Sporting Kansas City held on to beat the Chicago Fire 10 . ... Mason Toye scored twice to lead the Minnesota United to a 32 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday night. For a match that didn’t mean much, there was a lot going on as Argentina defeated Chile 21 to finish third in the Copa America in Sao Paulo.

It ended with Lionel Messi being sent off and boycotting the medal ceremony to protest the refereeing.

“We shouldn’t take part in this corruption,” Messi said. “There was lack of respect toward us during this Copa America. We could have done better, but they didn’t let us make it to the final. Corruption and the referees are not letting the fans enjoy football. This is ruining football.”

Messi was sent off after getting involved in an altercation in a tense thirdplace game between the rivals from the last two finals of the South American competition. Chile midfielder Gary Medel also was redcarded after the firsthalf shoving match with Messi at the Arena Corinthians.

WNBA: Odyssey Sims scored 21 points and the visiting Minnesota Lynx handed the Connecticut Sun their fourthstraight loss, 7471.
